BAE Systems and Norwegian shipyard Hamek have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on meeting Norway’s maritime needs, as announced by BAE Systems on 24 February 2025.
The agreement was formalized during an industry collaboration event at Hamek’s Harstad facility in northern Norway. As part of its expansion plans, Hamek intends to invest in dry-docking and ship maintenance infrastructure. The event was attended by British and Norwegian government and defense representatives and took place alongside the Royal Navy’s Bay-class auxiliary dock landing ship, RFA Lyme Bay.
Depending on the outcome of Norway’s future frigate program—where the UK’s Type 26 design is under consideration—BAE Systems and Hamek plan to explore advanced maintenance and support solutions for naval vessels. This partnership could contribute to regional economic growth.
Bruce Balchin, BAE Systems’ Norway campaign director, emphasized the longstanding maritime partnership between the UK and Norway, stating that the MoU strengthens industrial cooperation between the two nations while supporting Hamek’s infrastructure development.
Hamek’s Managing Director, Jan Oddvar Olsen, highlighted the MoU as a foundation for the company’s future growth, adding that its implementation would enhance Norway’s preparedness in the northern region.
